It is important to learn to deal with certain emotional and physical changes that take place in the post-surgery phase. What are they and how serious are they? Let us try to grasp them:
- Swelling or reddening effect: You may experience a tinge of reddening or occurrence of local swelling around the area of treatment, but there is nothing to worry about it. The swelling or reddening typically vanishes within a few hours. In some cases, slight blistering or bruising effect may be witnessed. It gets resolved on its own.
- Change in skin complexion: The skin may change its complexion a bit – becoming darker or lighter post treatment, but will regain its normal complexion soon. To minimize side effects and possible complications, patients are advised to limit exposure to sun before and after laser treatment. If this is not possible, wear a suitable daily sunblock lotion. The duration of treatment depends on the patient’s skin condition.
- Feedback following surgery: You can generally get back to your daily activities immediately after laser treatment. Knowing beforehand what to expect during the post-operative phase may allow you to cope better with the feedback – positive or negative – following surgery. Keep in mind that it is not unusual for a well-meaning relative or friend to casually remark ‘I preferred your earlier look’, or ‘You did not really need to undergo surgery.” Statements like these may sow seeds of self-doubts and cause feelings of regret, especially during the early recovery phase.
