Understanding laser therapy

Depending on your skin lesion and skin type, experts can work out if you qualify for laser treatments. Nearly every individual gains from laser therapy if employed selectively and effectively.

Before you opt for laser therapy, it is important to understand its basics. Laser resurfacing, also called laser peel, is a treatment, which not only reduces facial wrinkles but also corrects certain visible skin irregularities. Blemishes or acne scars can be cured with this treatment. Concentrated pulsating light beams are employed to remove and resurface skin – layer by layer. The end result is a tighter, smoother appearance and a precise finish.

Laser is a pure form of light that comprises only one wavelength. There are different wavelengths that carry varied penetration and absorption properties on an individual’s skin. Generally speaking, the higher the wavelength emitted, the deeper the laser’s penetration level!

Various structures within a patient’s skin respond to different laser wavelengths in a different manner. For instance, hair will respond differently than blood vessels. As the structures within the skin soak the laser energy, they get heated up and are destroyed. Each structure can be selectively treated with a different wavelength to destroy certain structures within one’s skin without affecting the other skin structures.
