What are the main types of birthmarks?

Three major types of birthmarks commonly found are as follows:

  • Macular stains: They are often known as salmon patches. Macular stains are flat. They show up usually on the eyelids and neck most often as light pink patches. Sometimes these skin marks fade out, especially those seen on eyelids during childhood, with age. Many of these, particularly those on the neck remain.
  • Vascular malformations: They comprise port-wine stains considered among the most common birthmarks on skin. They can come up anywhere on the body including visible areas like the face. The birthmarks of this type in most cases do not go away or fade. They need a surgery to remove them.
  • Pigmentation birthmarks: This type refers to the skin that has too much pigment or excess coloring. This comprises some or cream colored or brownish spots, moles and Mongolian spots; that might vanish by age 8.

Ensure that the type of birthmark is correctly identified. You need advice of an experienced cosmetic surgeon who will study any skin discoloration and other abnormality for their early signs, before they become difficult to treat and remove.

Of course, owing to laser treatment, birthmark removal has become painless and less complicated. The surgery is widely considering by many parents for their children. Over the last few years, the popularity of the advanced laser technology has immensely. It is absolutely safe and very effective to eliminate or shrink birthmarks close to the surface like port-wine stains.
