With time our skin changes. The amount of collagen and elastin decreases , as well as the gel (known as hyaluronic acid )which the collagen and elastin is suspended in, also diminishes. This causes the loss of tissue volume and results in deepening of furrows and loss of lip volume. Dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Restylane® Fine Lines, and Perlane® are clear gels that contain hyaluronic acid that is synthesized in the laboratory.

Injectable fillers are medical products that are injected into the skin to add volume, alter contours and achieve a more youthful appearance.

"What are dermal fillers used for?"

The primary purpose of dermal fillers is to smooth out smile lines, severe and moderate facial wrinkles, and folds which occur around the nose and mouth. These are called the nasolabial folds (the groove from the edge of the nose to the corner of the lip). These grooves start up when you're around 30 and then progressively go deeper and lower. These grooves can drag the face down and make you look older and more tired. Filling the grooves in with Restylane® camouflages and softens the lines.

Another common area to use fillers is in the lips (increasing the fullness, defining the lips, or treating the small lines around the lips). Restylane® is ideal for creating more fullness to the lips. It creates a very natural appearance without looking or feeling stiff. There is very little swelling after so you can usually go right back to work or to your usual routine. Clients will often start with a small increase in volume to enhance their lips or give more shape or definition to the borders of the lips. Small lines around the lips can also be effectively filled in without changing the size of the lips. Sometimes fillers may be combined with a very small dose of BOTOX to relax the muscles and enhance the improvements.

Other targeted areas can include the forehead and area around the eyes. Restylane® can also be used to treat acne scars.

"How long will the treatment take?"

You are usually in the office for about 30-60 minutes for most procedures (no pre-testing is required).

"Does it hurt?"

An appropriate form of anaesthetics such as ice, freezing gel on the skin, or a small needle will be suggested depending on the area being treated and your preference. It is usually quite tolerable.

"What can I expect right after the treatment?"

There will be mild redness and swelling that can last for a day or two and can be improved by applying cold gel packs to the affected areas. In some cases mild bruising can occur and can last up to a week (can generally be covered up with make-up). There is usually no significant discomfort after the procedure. Patients generally can return to normal activity the same or the next day.

"How long will the effects last?"

In average, the effects last for about 12 months in areas such as the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, general lines and wrinkles. In the lips the effects usually last for up to 6 months. The effects of a deep volume filling, such as cheek filling, may last for up to 2 years.
